NFPGS World Parks Day Conference 2011

The 17th September, World Parks Day, saw 80 delegates from groups across the country with a shared interest in our green open spaces, gathered together at Austin Court in Birmingham.

This was the first conference of the NFPGS and it proved to be a great success. I would like to thank Awards for All for their funding, Quadron Services Ltd for sponsoring our event and Birmingham City Council for their help and support.

It was a full morning of presentations covering the subjects of funding, health, lobbying for resources and two very interesting case studies from Birkenhead Park on the Wirral and Cotteridge Park in Birmingham. I would like to thank all these speakers as they were all so inspiring and imparted a wealth of knowledge and information. The afternoon sessions were a host of workshops covering such diverse subjects as Wildflower Meadows, Volunteering with BTCV, Investigating Nature with OPAL, Empowering Groups, Lobbying, Healthy Activities and Warley Woods Community Trust presented How to Find Funding.

A highlight of the day was our “Just a Minute” slot where delegates had just one minute to tell the audience a success story from their green space. This brought forth a myriad of good news stories, events and activities that are taking place in our parks and open spaces across the country.

I was delighted to be able to chair this first conference and from this success we are now looking towards next year to find the support and sponsorship needed to run an even more successful event!
